Your Raison d’être

raison d’être (French, “reason for being”): the purpose, justification, or essential meaning or purpose behind someone’s existence.*

What if it’s true that “there are no accidents”? That instead of a random, coincidental, or “accidental” incarnation, what if each of us is here at this point in history for a reason, a purpose?

What if one of the following is true?…

  • Source/God decided we should be here at exactly now—and we agreed.
  • We chose to be here at this particular time—and Source/God agreed.

What if the following is also true?…

A. We’re here to learn and grow as a person—as a soul, and to heal our soul wounds.
B. We’re here to experience being Oneness by connecting with and contributing to other people.
C. We’re here for each of us to make our particular contribution to resolving this mess Humanity finds itself in—and to creating a new path forward for us.
D. All of the above.

And what if Source/God and/or we decided exactly what would help us to do “D. All of the above”?…

  • This particular physical body with its physical characteristics, strengths, and challenges
  • The family we were born into
  • Our ethnicity and racial identity
  • The location of our birth as well as all other places we’ve visited or lived since then
  • Our nationality
  • Specific partners, children (or not), friends, neighbors, coworkers, and acquaintances
  • The socio-economic status we were born into—and are in now
  • Talents we were born with
  • Values we’ve developed
  • Skills we’ve acquired
  • Any job/career we’ve worked in
  • Accomplishments and gains, as well as “failures” and losses
  • Interests and hobbies we’ve pursued
  • The life experiences we’ve had—good and “bad”
  • The people we’ve come in contact with and/or have somehow affected with our words or actions—and/or have affected us with their words or actions
  • The spiritual belief system, gender identity, sexual orientation, political tribe, etc. we each ascribe to
  • And whatever else—everything—that makes you, you and me, me.

Think about that: IF no accidents, then every aspect in the long bullet list above was specifically constellated to help us do “D. All of the above.” And then, given Free Will, we have time after time made the choice to take advantage of that help—or not—as we navigate our lives. Including, yep, if we choose to fulfill our raison d’être.

So after writing all of the above, I was led to repeat what I said in the very first post I published in this blog—a mantra of sorts that I heard many, many years ago:

Remember who you are.
Why you’re here.
And what this is all about.

I’m going to expand on each of those but in a slightly different order:

Who you are…
“You” are all of the above core aspects and identities AND a powerful spark of the Divine.

What this is all about…
Humanity is at a crossroads with the opportunity to once and for all heal long-time wounds (like racism) AND to create a new path forward into a new paradigm that benefits ALL people (and the planet and all critters) vs. just a select few.

Why you’re here…
Each of us has the incredible opportunity to make our unique contribution to creating that new path for Humanity.

Unfortunately, for some of Humanity their contribution appears to be creating as much chaos as possible, as well as causing a lot of suffering and upset for much of the rest of Humanity. And yet, their acting out the darkest parts of “human nature” can help us realize, “No, that’s NOT who we want to be. That’s NOT who we are as ‘Humanity’.” And thus by the stark comparison, they’re helping us steer the direction of Humanity’s path toward the Light.

So actually these perpetrators of chaos and suffering are also serving a purpose—their raison d’êtra—although that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be held accountable for their actions. Whether that’s on this plane—or another.

But for those of us who do care about Humanity’s path shifting to the Light, I urge each of us to ask ourselves:

What am I doing about making my unique contribution to shifting Humanity’s path?
What IS my raison d’être?
And what am I going to do about it from here on out?

I’ve made A LOT of suggestions in this blog for things you can do to ripple out positive energy to counteract all the negative. Like suggesting you practice Connection, Kindness, and Compassion.

And I’ve also suggested that you take positive action. Like getting involved in a community project, contributing your skills (and/or $) to a group that’s doing good work, volunteering in a cause or organization that’s helping people who are suffering (such as a food bank), or doing something that directly mitigates or remediates the damage being done.

So I’ve made some general suggestions but it’s up to you to identify your own raison d’être—your particular contribution—your part in the global process currently unfolding. It could be large or small, a one-time thing or ongoing, easy for you or challenging (thus helping you learn and grow), and something unexpected or quite familiar to you. It could be something I’ve suggested here. Or something that comes to you completely out of the blue.

But I urge you to identify or confirm your contribution, your raison d’être. Tune in to your Guidance or whatever you choose to call it: whisperings from the Holy Spirit, from your Higher Self, inner-knowing, intuition, sixth sense, or gut feeling. Maybe be on the lookout for a “message from the Universe” that could come from any source at any time—but you’ll know it when you hear it. You’ll feel it in your gut—and in your heart.

And I’ll bet that whatever your contribution is, it aligns with your particular values, experience, knowledge, skills, and interests. And I wouldn’t be surprised that whatever it is, it also helps you learn and grow as a human being—and a soul, and enables you to positively affect people, and vice versa.

So one last question:

What if the unique contribution you are called to make right now is one that can be viewed as a privilege—and a responsibility?

A privilege because this shift will be huge—and how cool to help make it happen. And a responsibility because maybe this is the contribution you were incarnated to make. A contribution you agreed to make. Part of your raison d’être. Your “reason for being” here at this time in human history.

So again, I urge you to identify or confirm your contribution. And then “Just do it!”

Now.

Because our national and global situation is serious and urgent. And you are waaay more powerful than you think.

  1. Nancy, thanks for the inspiration! I was able to take a deep breath and slowly breathe out for the first time in many days. It gives me comfort to see our current situation as huge paradigm that we chose to participate in! Not a hopeless mess that leaves me feeling bleak.
